SET OF FOUR ONYX AND GILT BRONZE STATUES SYMBOLISING THE FOUR SEASONS

Italy, Rome, first half of the 17th century.

Oriental alabaster and gilt bronze.

Bases sculpted in bianco e nero antico.

Flora or Spring Allegory: H. 55.5 cm (22 in.). H. total including the base: 62 cm (24 ½ in.).

Ceres or Summer Allegory: H. 54 cm (21 ¼ in.). H. total including the base: 60.5 cm (24 in.).

Bacchus or Autumn Allegory: H. 53.5 cm (21 in.). H. total including the base: 60 cm (23 ½ in.).

Winter Allegory: H. 54.5 cm (21 ½ in.). H. total including the base: 61 cm (24 in.).

Bases: H. 7 cm; (2 ¾ in.) (Winter Allegory) or 6.8 cm. (2 ½ in.) (the other three allegories); W. 19.8 cm (7 ¾ in.); D. 19.3 cm (7 ½ in.).

PROVENANCE: private collection.

A similar set, representing the Four Continents, is held today in the collection of the royal palace of Łazienki, the summer residence of Stanisłas Auguste Poniatowski (1732-1798), king of Poland, in Warzow (inv. ŁKr 367-370).
