Along with a new conception of space, Roman artists from the 17th century produced a very rich and spectacular decorative repertory, very figurative, inextricably linked to the architectural elements through stuccos, frescoes and engravings, but also applied to furniture, fabrics, goldsmithery, festive decorations and stage art. They marked this way the beginning of a decisive turn in the history of art with the emergence of the Baroque period which would spread through Europe, and of which the pair of consoles in carved and gilt wood presented here, coming from the collection of the princes Massimo in Rome, constitute the perfect example.
